"Kent Nagano, music director of the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, well-known for his innovative concert programmes, in a new Beethoven recording with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, whose chief conductor he has been since 2006.
The new CD offers an attractive programme based on Beethoven’s admiration for Napoleon Bonaparte. It combines his famous Third Symphony, ""Eroica"", which the composer originally planned to dedicate to Napoleon, with excerpts of the ballet music ""The Creatures of Prometheus"". At the time, Napoleon was often likened to the Greek demigod Prometheus, as he spread the ideas of the Enlightenment throughout Europe.
Kent Nagano has just won a Grammy for “Best Opera Recording” at the 53rd Grammy Awards.
Kent Nagano has established an international reputation as one of the most insightful and visionary interpreters of both the operatic and symphonic repertoire. In September 2006, he became Music Director of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and General Music Director of the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich.
With the OSM, Kent Nagano has released a double album entitled Beethoven: Ideals of the French Revolution devoted entirely to the music of Beethoven, Mahler’s The Song of the Earth with tenor Klaus Florian Vogt and baritone Christian Gerhaher, a recording of works by contemporary composer Unsuk Chin featuring violinist Viviane Hagner and a recording of Beethoven’s Fourth and Fifth Piano Concertos featuring pianist Till Fellner
